With 2022 around the corner and the door of 2021 still open, it is curious how doors have been both physical and metaphorical this year. We had physical doors falling off, we installed interior ones, the fridge door still needs integrating and laundry doors had to be replaced. Personally, ‘doors’ were closed for no reason other than age which is frustrating but others opened unexpectedly. My husband stepped out of a long-term career into a new one but not without hurdles to clear. New friends opened doors and older friendships opened up even further while, sadly, other friends closed theirs. That old adage of when one door closes, another opens, seemed apt.
Doors in Feng Shui
The front door is so important and check out my other posts on this. It is the ‘mouth’ of the house. Keep it clean and uncluttered. Don’t pile it up with shoes and coats as the Chi energy will struggle to get in to your place. Check where the door enters in the Bagua map. Ours is in the career sector and mirrors the Water element with blues and greys. The wooden doors are often admired for their age and beauty. Other sectors for the front door are likely to be in the Self Knowledge area or Travel and Helpful People. If you use another door such as a back door or from the garage, have a rethink what this is saying. Ask a friend how it feels to enter your home. You may want to change the habit of using both doors. Try not to use two different doors as it confuses the Chi energy of how to even enter your place.
Interior Doors
Keep them clear and clean. Consider how they open, in or out. Do they crash into other door knobs – something to avoid as Feng Shui practice says this leads to clashes for the occupants. Replace old or broken doors and include cupboard doors as well. We have kitchen cupboards that crashed into each other so we took the handle off one and replaced it with an easy to open door.
Let There Be Light!
Our kitchen doesn’t have a window and having only down-lights, a strange use of space, we reviewed the wall between the dining room and kitchen. Open-plan was considered but having two people working from home, it is good to have two different spaces. Then an idea from another house made sense. French bi-fold doors. The only problem is, you can’t buy them in France! The joining wall was restructured and two glass-panelled doors were installed. After a messy and trying three weeks, the construction was finished and, after painting, they make such a difference.
Goodbye 2021
Recalling what Paul Coelho said regarding closing doors, “not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because they lead you nowhere”, a final goodbye is to be whispered to a strange year of ups and downs with a continuing pandemic but with so many wonderful moments to focus on.
So goodbye 2021 and hello 2022 with the following thought from T.S. Eliot – “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice.”
