Black in the Feng Shui world is all about water and is often used for the front door, where Feng Shui begins. A black front door offers strength to the house as you enter and is a colour related to the flow of wealth. Black is a great colour to contrast other colours with and will definitely partner with metal colours such as white, grey, purple, blue and green. in the Feng Shui life cycle, water polishes metal and enables wood to grey. It is best to avoid it with fire colours as fire is said to douse out water and water muddies earth. Are you still with me? It isn’t that complicated if you follow the Bagua Map. A note of caution; too much black can make you feel ‘at sea’ – too much water!

Career and Life Path

This is a great area for black and I have seen some chic floor tiles in black and white and also some great rugs. It is a good colour to enter in to and can be used in picture frames, rugs, ornaments and the door area lighting. I have had a kitchen in this area and white cupboards with a black benchmark top was so smart. We had our past Berlin apartment bathroom in this sector and it was important to ‘soak’ up some of the water by using an earth element. We placed dark stone floor tiles and light grey stone in big slabs in the shower to soften the colour. With metal and white added, it was chic but had a softness.

Inner Knowledge

I would probably use black in accessories in this area. It is the area for learning and self-awareness. Our front door has often opened in to this section so I make sure there is a soulful energy in this area including using art work and ornaments focusing on inner self-knowledge. We have painted inner front doors a deep blue in one apartment and white in another. Picture frames are often black and art work has been used focusing on gentle water flows, not massive waves or surf!

Family and Health

This is a wood area so could manage some black as water grows wood. Just balance carefully. This area is often been in our kitchens. In the past, we added some black touches but kept it minimal as there are many fire elements in the kitchen and as said before, fire puts out water. If this area is a bedroom, living area or office, black would look great but as always balance the Five Elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

Communication and Creativity

White is the dominant colour here and Metal is the element. Black can be used creatively. If a children’s bedroom, it is probably best using it in touches as it can bring too much water in the sector which is emotion as well. Recommend using whites and softer colours to encourage good sleep!

Travel and Helpful People

This is the last sector where black can be used. It is a metal sector and the combination of black, grey and white are really chic. Black maps, black and white photos of travel are idea to use in this area. Black and white images of mentors or people who inspire you are said to attract supportive people in to your lives. I have black and white Art Deco prints of cars and planes which I love.

Where to Avoid Using Black

All the other sectors basically. However, don’t forget you can use the Five Elements cycle. This requires careful balance of each element and colours that match. Place the Bagua map with the North entrance facing in for each room as you would with the overall house or apartment. Then put accessories and colours according to the Bagua map in that room. Make sure no one element dominates the other.
