Friends for Dinner

Dinah Washington sang with emphasis, "what a difference, a day makes, 24 little hours..." This song is in my head as I contemplate the past week of positive outcomes. New work projects, new friends by chance and steps forward in the land of French bureaucracy. It looks as if my social security number may be delivered in the next 10 days. Note the word 'may'! My husband's residency card should be picked up at the end of July and we are both completely vaccinated. A yacht cruise with a group we have never met ended up connecting with four

Exterior Harmony

It had been one of those weeks. An uncle from the invisible side of the family - a long typical Irish foster story that only the Irish are not upset by or astounded at - had passed away. The rollercoaster of moving to a new place continues with new friends offering moments of delight and other friends letting you down when you least expect it. The grand old story of life. So we walked to the nearest cocktail bar on the beach, a pseudo Balinese affair. It offered solace with wonderfully kitsch decor, garish cocktails and sitting with feet

Feng Shui Conversations – The Corridor Effect

A lovely jewellery shop, or bijoux as they call it in France, has opened up opposite us. We have got to know the owners and by serendipity, he is interested in permaculture and alternative thinking. We were offered a glass of champagne on their opening day. As we discussed Feng Shui it was immediately clear that the shop has a corridor effect that could quickly be fixed. Hallways & Corridors Many houses and spaces have a door that opens straight into a long hallway. Some corridors even go right out a back door or through to windows. The energy

Your Front Door – Feng Shui Conversations

Every entrance in Feng Shui is considered the 'mouth' of the place and it is also sets the scene when you enter. We have been in our French apartment for six months and whilst we love the building, the entrance is sad. So like good neighbours, we got the syndicat's permission to paint. We were told that the French 'don't do DIY' and it was obvious as we looked at the tired dark wooden paneling in our entrance, along with old traditional tomato tiles which are falling apart, a drab wooden yellowing post box and bits of plaster falling

Which way do you swim?

On holiday, a lovely brass fish caught my eye in our hotel. Having been told that I tend to swim against the tide, it was amusing to think of a Thai koi out of place in a French Provençal hotel but adding a ‘je ne sais quoi’. It resonated with the last six months of leaving one country to enter another. We often get asked where is home and answer wherever good friends and our favorite furniture is along with the cats. We too are fish displaced but hopefully we add to the local culture and find a sense

Down to Earth – Feng Shui Conversations

A climate demonstration went by the beach last week chanting in French that the Earth was warming and we need to ban plastics. I reflected on the sand we were sitting on, pondering that it is really particles of rock, glass, wood with some shell ground together in rough salt water to become the earth. Earth in the Bagua map represents the grounding of Chi energy in the home and focusing on the centre. The Earth element is also in the Relationship and the Knowledge/Self-Cultivation sectors. It is about knowing yourself and what is truly important to life. Consider

Tutti Frutti

Tomorrow we are able to go further than 10km from our home and next week, cafes and restaurants are possibly allowed to offer outside spaces. The local places are suddenly alive with the smell of fresh paint, stacked chairs and tables appearing and a definite positive change in the air. Splashes of pink, lime green and lemon decor are appearing in the windows and finally, the dour shades of Vermeer seem to be fading away. Interior decor looks less like living in a monastery and more like a tropical beach bar. Bordering on kitsch but shouting out fun and

In the Pink

A pertinent phrase for the moment, meaning in good health and spirits! The sun came out, all of our social bubble have had first vaccines, rumours of open space cafes are possible in the near future, and even the shops are changing from austere colours and blasts of pink are appearing. The colour pink has an interesting history fully appearing in the French Louis XV court's fashion and interior designs. In later eras, it became a colour associated with women and gentility. These days it is a symbol for breast cancer research, and is emerging as a colour of

Out of the Blue

A couple of friends had started to worry about my state of mind with recent posts on bright green, rose and white. But, you love blue! Yes I do and it is still the colour I turn to in decor, fashion and jewellery. But each place we have lived in has offered the colours that should be used. A cottage full of seagreen, sky blue and lemon, a city courtyard house full of beige, aqua and cream, Penang apartments with turmeric silks and white cotton, a French townhouse full of white and grey, our New York shoebox of white,

White on White 2021

An American Illustrator, Greg Parrish said, "If time were a colour, I bet it would be a tasteful off-white". Well, we are all marking time at the moment and seeking a renewed beginning, counting the days. Friends have had their first vaccines and I am alone like the last person standing, being too young at 57. With my thoughts turning inward and philosophical, I find myself drawn to white flowers, decor and dress. I have written several posts about white representing metal and clarity, but on a rainy day, let's pause and remember that our choice of colour and
