Traveling Furniture

Friends are considering an opportunity on the other side of the world. Lots of late night discussions with us and others and decisions to be made based on hope and a promise. Having done this several times over the years, it isn't easy. As we talked we both realised that we have lost some courage in doing this as each time has a sense of adventure but also a price to pay. After making such a decision, the practicality kicks in with logistics, removals and the dreaded bureaucracy of anywhere new. There is also what you are prepared to

Flower Power

Rumi, a Persian philosopher stated, "raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder'. How apt for another crazy week. On a morning walk, a single daffodil shone as the sun rose, symbolising hope at a time when it would be so easy to be despondent and move with a sense of hopelessness. Many psychologists at the moment are talking about hope not being delusional but providing energy to go forward. This past week, various people came together to help others during a terrible conflict, determined to focus on individuals and their needs. Not a

What on Earth? – Feng Shui Conversation

Wandering around Lisbon for a quick visit, it is clearly an Earth element city. Beautiful tiles, Art Deco architecture and lots of cobble stones! Take a step back and look at where you live. Are you in a Metal element city such as New York, a Wood city with masses of trees around or are you in a Water element city such as Venice with lots of canals or lakes? Even review your local area to see what the general element is and it is likely to demonstrate the related energy. You can then apply Feng Shui practice. What

All You Need is Love

When I think of Valentine's Day, the colour red on cheap cushioned chocolate boxes, tacky lingerie and plastic roses come to mind. You are thinking, well she isn't very romantic. Perhaps not, as it seems sad that we have to remind ourselves to profess love and affection on another Hallmark occasion. Isn't it better to cherish the first morning coffee presented in a favourite green cup and appreciate meals prepared with love at the end of a day? With that said, Feng Shui practice would embrace the whole sentiment in pink!   The Relationship Corner This is in the

Let There Be Light!

The mornings are getting lighter earlier and there is a breath of Spring in the air. More people are sitting outside the cafes and a feeling of optimism is appearing. Spring doesn't officially start until March but shades of lemon and blue are appearing in shop winters and after the Vermeer winter tones, they are very welcome. The natural sunlight is so important for wellbeing and a dose of Vitamin D is known to lower anxiety and depression. When we lived in Berlin and experienced our first winter, we were amazed to see the pharmacies full of vitamin D

Mellow Yellow

"The sound of colours is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with base notes, or a dark lake with the treble," said Wassily Kandinsky. Absolutely! Yellow sings of the sun and happiness which can be seen in the hints of spring appearing and the neon mimosa is the first sign. Yellow is the Feng Shui colour of stability and is comforting and grounding representing the Earth. How do we manage again this year, asked a friend when many of us feel as if the foundations and control of life are

Feng Shui for the New Year

Having lived in Penang, it is fascinating watching Chinese friends prepare for their new year. This year the lunar new year falls on 1 February. They clear away the 'old ghosts', the last year's bad luck, by cleaning, painting and fixing and we have even seen new kitchens being installed quickly. Out with the old and in with the new. It is a wonderful celebration of renewal with red and gold everywhere and wonderful feasts.  This year it is the Year of the Tiger; think of moving forward, adventure, taking risks and a leap of faith with lots of

What Sustains You?

There have been so many strange and interesting subjects that have come up and we are only sixteen days in to the year! Conversations seem to come back to what is going to sustain and support us in the coming months? Some friends are denying our new year and say they will "start in February with the Chinese and to hell with the Christian calendar, the year of the Tiger looks good with all of its forward energy and courage". Others are looking to have a different year, desperate for family, travel and other pastimes. We find music and

Is it a Spa or a Bathroom?

I love a spa for about thirty minutes and then I have had enough! Perhaps this is why I resonate with the Feng Shui practice of bathrooms not being visible, that don't encourage you to spend time there. This is fortunate, as it is also the least favourite room in our apartment. The tiles are basic and although the room functions, it isn't glamorous like previous bathrooms we have renovated. It was already installed when we bought the place and it looked like a laundry with a shower and toilet. We still wanted to add some kind of design,

Small Spaces

Leonardo da Vinci stated that, "Small rooms or dwellings discipline the mind, large ones weaken it". And who am I to argue with such a revered person and artist? We have lived in large three bedroom, double living room houses and a small Manhattan shoe box. As we enter 2022, we are finishing decorating our small French apartment where we would love every room to be bigger. This wish has generated several discussions on when do we have enough, why do we want larger spaces, what about the tiny house movement and is it all about 'keeping up with
