What a few weeks it has been! The kitchen was installed and floating floorboards were finished. One week before our furniture arrived. It is a small haven of normality as we unpack lots of boxes knowing that we have too much stuff. The cook of the apartment, my husband, hit a low point when he realised that we had expanded in our previous bigger apartment and in particular with kitchen ware. After lots of soothing words, common sense prevailed and we sent off boxes to a storage unit. These will be reviewed when both of us have more energy and our bodies and muscles have recovered.

Feng Shui First

The kitchen is in the Career and Lifepath which is interesting as we consider ourselves to be in the latter part of our careers. It was a sad 1990s beige and black granite benchtop with tired and dull beige cupboards which had been poorly designed. It looked and felt sad and was crying out for an update if not a full upgrade.

For this sector, the colours should be white, black and dark blues to partner with the elements of Water and Metal. It is all about the flow of life, like a river. We chose white cupboards to maximise storage and added a dark granite fridge/freezer and black dishwasher and oven. A stone bench top added the final stark chicness. Then the wow factor, the tiles. At much expense, we chose a soft grey and white ceramic tile with each having a different pattern and the look is beautiful. Accessories have been kept at a minimum but the dancing cows are back to make the space light and fun. Perhaps that is what we are looking for in our career path at this point. I am working part-time in a less stressful situation and earning far less but am at ease. My husband is starting this week to teach refugees. A role he took on decades ago with Cambodians, leading to a long career in education, and a love of Asian food as well!

Final Thoughts

As we sit on the sofa thinking we are in either a hoarder’s paradise or a vintage musty second hand shop, we are grateful for all those who helped us. We have drinks this coming Sunday with neighbours and so much won’t have been done or look perfect but we are past that. A neighbour was thrilled that we had moved in as she would have younger people next door. Then recently, a few younger people have moved in and we have said the exact same thing! We will have a young Brazilian couple with their son and our lovely neighbour whose husband is slowly dying but somehow maintains her positivity – a reality check during moving. There is a young couple that consist of a gentle Dutch giant and an Irish blonde pixie, and a new couple who have bought their ‘first mortgage’ and are coming as they think it will be ‘fab’! There will be cocktails, champagne and canapés and lots of chin-chin, santé and cheers!
