This is a very practical Feng Shui post about the entrance to your living place which is so important and sets the energy and attraction for the Bagua map. Before you even get inside your house, apartment or living space, take a step back and look at what the exterior tells you. If there is a front garden, is it tidy and welcoming? If there is a porch, are there any broken panels or steps needing to be fixed? Does the doorbell work, is there a light for safety? If it is an apartment, you may find like us that the hallways are ‘shabby chic’ and a larger paint job or renovation is required. That being said, it should still be clean, tidy and uncluttered. Even ask a friend how they perceive the entrance to your garden or living area. How this area looks will reflect what you are attracting or not.

The Front Door

This is considered to be the ‘mouth’ of the house or apartment. It should be a strong single door and ideally not a double one as often seen in large houses. A double door is seen to be a ‘double mouth’! Make sure the door feels solid and secure. We had an ancient door in one apartment with old antique glass windows which people would glance into. After one night when a group went by looking in, we quickly put opaque film over the glass to give a sense of privacy. Sometimes there is a simple and effective solution. Also, make sure the locks work and that there are no squeaky hinges. It is the main entrance to the interior space and should open easily.

Many people ask about a red door for Feng Shui. This depends on the whole area and where the front door is placed. We have usually had the main door in the centre of the building or to the right and have painted the interior door in a dark grey to match the Bagua map colours. Our current door is from the 19th century with iron laced panels. The combination of black and dove grey are perfect. A note, many people go in through their garage rather than using the main door, or even the back door. It would be best to use the door that was designed for the living space as that is seen to be the entrance for the Bagua map.

Plants and Decor

If you have a garden or a porch at the front, choose plants that are easy to manage and are healthy and ideally with round leaves. Make sure they are watered and are healthy. The same with any chairs or decor, they should be fresh and clean. The whole area should be welcoming and inviting.

I Am Renting!

This is often a question that is asked. Check with your owner as they may allow some changes as long as you return the space back to the original state. For one apartment we rented, we painted the front door step, replaced the light and put a fresh mat outside. With another apartment, we put up black and white photos in smart metal frames in the hallway and filled in the holes when we left. Usually the owners are grateful as the changes have improved the exterior look. It is worth asking the question. If the answer is no then think outside of the box and look in home improvement stores and garden centres for ideas. Often stick on/peel off floor tiles can be used, plastic plant pots can be painted a different colour, battery-operated stick on lamps that are available online can create a lovely ambiance or feeling of safety. You just need to be creative and can always take any items with you. Just remember, this is the initial entry to the whole of your Bagua map and can affect your interior harmony. Welcome in!
