The shops are full of decorations as Christmas is around the corner and decor is being sold in red, green, white and every other colour in the rainbow and representing all sorts of objects. I have even seen a red lobster tree decoration! So how does Feng Shui fit in being an Eastern practice? It can still be applied with a focus on using the right colour and element. Check out the Bagua map and consider decorations for each sector of your place. Think about what the decorations are saying; a Christmas tree in a Wood sector is perfect and a silver Metal star would be great in a Metal area or in the Children’s sector. It may sound crazy but it can work. I even have a couple of friends who have two trees with different colours, and another family has one just for the children, whatever works for you!
Career & Lifepath
This is one place where you can put a red wreath on the front door as the Fire element pushes the Water element forward. We have a lovely metal wreath of tiny bells we put on our front door which is in the Career and Lifepath sector. This is perfect as it follows the principle of Water being polished by Metal and it makes a lovely sound when someone enters the apartment. Other decorations of metal and in dark petrol blue, grey, black and white colours, can also work in this area.
Self-Knowledge
This sector is ideal for any religious decor or anything spiritual such as a star or angel. For the element, choose ceramic or metal decorations in the colours of blue and green.
Health & Family
Anything green or brown and related to trees and representing wood can be placed here. Just remember, dried flowers, dead wood and pine cones are not considered ideal as Feng Shui practice sees this as representing death. Silk or paper decorations are fine or even plastic but not pieces of wood. Not being a fan of chopping down trees unless necessary, we have a plastic fir tree and it looks real, try it out. I can hear readers already saying but pine cones are part of Christmas. It is up to you if you want to use them but Feng Shui would say that it is best to be avoided.
Wealth
You know the rule, spend as much as you can on decor for this sector. The element is Wood but ceramic or pottery items would probably be a better choice. Colours are Christmas green and navy blue and anything ideally depicting money and prosperity.
Relationships
Make sure there are pairs of birds, fruit, trees, bells and anything else for this area. Pinks, red and white are the colours to be selected and this can apply to bed linen and cushions as well. Think of harmony and happiness icons and symbols.
Creativity & Children
A colleague took this to heart and placed a white Christmas tree with fun decorations in white and pink for her children. She also encouraged them to make paper chains and to be creative. It is a bit of mess but the children love it.
Travel & Helpful People
Anything metallic and shiny in silver, gold and white representing whatever travel or helpful people means to you.
And Finally
The centre of your apartment or house. This is the centre of the whole map and is about health and the Earth element. Think of the three key points, clear, clean and uncluttered. Put the tree elsewhere and let the Feng Shui energy move around the different sectors. Happy Feng Shui/Christmas decorating!
