Doris Lessing said that the ‘bedroom is a place for reading, thinking or doing nothing’. Feng Shui practice would add the areas of love and the primary relationship. On that note, the main bedroom in the new apartment was full of depressing brown wooden furniture with bright tangerine walls, mirrored wardrobes and ten bright down lights. That image is probably all you need to understand why it has been painted white and cream! Next step was to pull out the wooden drawers, replace the broken wardrobe doors and paint the old salon doors. Wooden floorboards were replaced and down lights were removed for a single pendant light.
Feng Shui First
This is the first time a bedroom has been in the Self-Knowledge sector and that has raised interesting questions on what that means especially if most of the time is spent there sleeping! This area is all about meditation and a sense of calm. The element is Earth, meaning that ceramics and earthy tones can be used. Other colours to use could include blue and green. Water is a partner element that works well with Earth but note that Wood overwhelms the Earth element and uses up the Chi energy. There are wooden floor boards but they are not the dominant factor. A soft earthy cream colour has been used to warm up the space and also to create a sense of light. The choice of bed linen is important to establish colour and elements. We chose a bedspread of blue and green birds and flowers symbolising nature with soft colours that are inviting and happy. It has a lovely inviting appeal.
The bed needed to be against the wall with the door at the left which means we can’t see anyone entering the room. To ‘cure’ this, a round convex mirror will be put up in the arch for an easy view of the doorway but not so you wake up and see yourself, avoiding the ‘ghost’ effect of seeing your reflexion. For another example of this, we recently visited a friend who asked me to look at their bedroom Feng Shui and immediately I highlighted the television was directly facing the bed. It has a mirror effect and I advised her to put a shawl over it each night. Feng Shui practice says to avoid electronic items in the bedroom as it is should be a place for rest and the relationship. If you have mirrored wardrobes on the directly facing wall, consider frosting with stick-on glass sheets. It is all about balancing the energy to create a peaceful space, a sanctuary and a refuge.
