We were in London for work and were catching buses, planes, taxis and trains. Included was an unexpected visit to Dublin in one day. No idea what it looks like but the taxi drivers were great. Two days of holiday were included but ended up being a hybrid of answering calls and attempts at taking time off. We could have bought concert tickets but were exhausted each day. That is when unexpected moments are so important.

  • Two hours wandering in Hyde Park’s autumn tones with dogs let loose to gallop at invisible life;
  • The Serpentine lake in the park watching swans, ducks and moorhens eye off tourists’ bread;
  • Popping into (an English phrase) vintage second hand shops, buying charity Christmas cards and a book on Cairo coffee life;
  • Overhearing conversations – “that geezer who ahksed for your number bro, never gave it to ‘im.”;
  • Lighting candles in an ancient Bayswater church for the death of a friend’s brother;
  • Buying a short, cherry red coat – yes! I was persuaded away from the black, green, tan versions and took the plunge!

My last moment was coffee and cake and as I ate a bag of sugar, there was a realisation that it is the fleeting moments that add flavour when tiredness hits and no amount of glitz and glamour can match a morsel of life.
