“It’s the table and the bed that count in life. And everything else we do, we do so we can get back to the table, back to the bed”- Marlena De Blasi. We are in the process of packing up again and will be taking our American bed. It is big with a wonderful mattress fit for a princess and a pea. It was 2010 and we were moving to New York. We had stayed one night in a tiny Holiday Inn and the next morning we asked what the brand was and immediately bought it and it is still fantastic. The cats have hidden under it when stressed, sometimes I want to join them, and it has a great solid headboard that is wonderful for sitting up with a book.

Feng Shui First

My mentor, Clear Englebert, has a wonderful book called Bedroom Feng Shui. I recommend it and he outlines some practical thoughts and solutions. Feng Shui practice prefers the bedroom to be more yin than yang, more rest than activity and smaller spaces are preferred than grand rooms especially with a bathroom in. Of course, the bedroom location is the first point to consider. Where is it in the bagua map, what elements need to be used and what needs to be avoided. Our new apartment will have the bedroom in the Wisdom and Self-Knowledge sector with the element of Earth and colours of blue and green. It will be near a street so heavy curtains are recommended by Feng Shui and good old common sense.

Bed Location

For those who have been reading, you know the drill, it shouldn’t face the door in what is called the ‘coffin position’. You should be able to see the door from where you are lying in bed. If this isn’t possible, hang a mirror in a position that allows you to see someone coming in. Convex mirrors are fashionable at the moment and are ideal. We will need to do this in our new place. Place the bedhead against a solid wall, with a solid bedhead, both convey strength for the relationship. Avoid if possible, having a bed against a wall with a toilet on the other side. Before panic sets in, there are solutions to these issues with both practical furniture and Feng Shui crystals. Other posts and Clear’s book outline how to manage these.

Colours

As our bedroom will be in the Self-Knowledge sector for the first time, a lovely duvet colour will be used which is a mix of blues and greens with leaves and birds on it. Pale apple green cushions will be added. There is a lot of brown painted wood work and it will all be painted in a matt buttermilk colour to match the Earth element. Even though it is not in the Relationship sector, it is important to still include aspects of that area. Artwork denoting two people, birds, plants etc., are ideal. If for example, the main bedroom is in the Wealth sector, the same principle applies but it would also be recommended to buy the most expensive bed linen and bed possible to marry the elements of the Relationship factor with the bagua sector. There are some basics to follow, avoid tvs and computers if possible. If your space is a studio, zone areas with screens, curtains and furniture to delineate the bagua sectors.

Final Thoughts

The bedroom is the space we spend at least seven hours of our day, it is where the body restores itself. It is where our systems reboot including the immune system. It is said to improve memory and to help with strengthening the heart. Sweet dreams!
