We live in interesting times. Today, Germany goes to the polls with the end of the Merkel era and the Swiss have finally voted for same-sex marriage; better late than never. Australia is still behind the rest of the world, working through the pandemic with no forethought or backward look to 2020 in other countries to learn from our mistakes. The news is sobering, the air is cooling, leaves fall, the sea is like Spanish glass and the melancholy note of Autumn hovers around the corner. I prefer the hope of Spring. I have friends who love snow and watching their breath suspended in icy air but it is not for us. I still say we should follow the squirrels, store nuts in our cheeks, bury in a warm hollow and come out when winter is over.

Autumn Leaves

The stores are full of warm clothes and shades of grey and brown. Not my favourite time of year and I always wonder why they don’t use lighter colours to get us through the darker and colder months. And so I choose to ignore these and buy a sherbet lemon and cream jumper, a lavender blue cotton top and pistachio green linen throw cushions. All to add a sense of sunshine and warmth. Although I can feel Autumn’s breadth at my back with the summer sun losing strength, I buy bunches of pastel flowers and continue to cherish blue skies.
