Years ago, a young friend of 11 years asked, “so, what are your dreams?” I had to think about it then and I still think about it now as they shift shape around and through the years. Goals and expectations continue to change and often life’s turns throw out surprises which override those desires. As we are working through a post-Covid summer, dreams have turned to friendships, good food and wine, chocolate and a pair of blue summer shorts with matching sandals on sale! But seriously, a good night’s sleep is often undervalued and it is key for our bodies and brains to function. I have friends going through issues, tossing and turning waking up sleep-deprived with a grey sense of fatigue. It is so important in our lives and in Feng Shui, to have a wonderful bedroom to escape to and seek rest.

Feng Shui First

Find out where you main bedroom is on the Bagua Map. If you live in a studio, find the key place your bed is placed in. Our French apartment bedroom is in the Relationship corner. As with previous posts, we have created a soft coffee, ivory room with a big American bed that has been a sanctuary from life over the last 10 years. A friend said he hoped we wouldn’t be offended if he said it looked like a hotel room. We were thrilled! If yours is in the Relationship corner, make sure there are images of two and two lamps. Have the bed ideally with your feet facing a wall and not going out the door; you know the drill! If it is in the Wealth sector, drop some serious money there as my Feng Shui mentor says. Best linen and decor you can afford. https://interiorharmonyblog.com/2019/01/13/feng-shui-the-main-bedroom/

It is a Bedroom!

Keep the TV out. This is not only a Feng Shui aspect but about sleep patterns. Aside from the practicalities of getting a good bed, low light and noise, it shouldn’t be a second office. Friends who have lived in studios have cleverly used fold-up beds and sofas to ensure a living and sleeping place or have used screens or bookshelves to separate the space from the rest of the room. Another friend used curtains to section-off the bed. If you have to work in your bedroom area, see how you can organise the desk space and put all electricals, equipment and books away, preferable in a cupboard so you can put your work away.

Go to Sleep

I am a person who doesn’t sleep well and I am a member of the 3am club and I am not talking about dancing! I have reviewed lots of ideas on how to get to sleep and what to do when you wake up too early. Here are some tips:

  • Take magnesium as it possibly helps with restless muscles and stress levels;
  • Ensure the level of light and noise suit you, I like a bit of light but others like a complete blackout;
  • Regulate your temperature. If you are too hot or too cold, you won’t sleep well so check the weight and warmth of bed linen;
  • Avoid sugar late at night as you can get an energy spike;
  • Some say to get out of bed but I prefer to do something repetitive such as chanting a phrase over and over

Sweet dreams!
