In Feng Shui practice, a rice bowl symbolises abundance and prosperity in life, career and of course, money. They are not just for serving dishes. Singing bowls are brass bowls tuned to a note which can be used to clear out old energy and being a singer, I have a lovely one in a rich tone which I happily use when moving in or out of a home. In Asia, you will often see a wealth bowl in a house full of items that symbolise money including faux jewels. I am not a fan of this kind of Feng Shui decoration and fortunately, neither is my Feng Shui guru, Clear Englebert, who prefers to work with a modern approach. However, I buy bowls for memories as eating from them brings back the food, smells and images of a place or a feeling.
Use Them
We were fortunate to visit Kyoto years ago for Christmas. It was dark and cold and 6 lovely apple green bowls shone in a gallery and at a closer look, had white insides with delicate blue patterns. We bought them and got the exchange rate wrong. What we thought was $10 for each ended up being $30 each! They have moved several countries and instantly bring back that memory and still add a happy colour to the kitchen. We use them for breakfast but wash them by hand and gently dry them. They make us happy. How many of us had grandparents or parents who have stuff that is only ‘for best’? What is the point of this? My mother inherited lovely crystal glasses and after some debate, she now uses them for everyday dinners. Buy the bowls but check for heat resistance if you are using them for hot food.
Decorative Bowls
It seems simple but a clear bowl with battery operated fairy lights is a lovely addition especially as the nights get darker. Floating candles and flowers that match a bowl instantly add atmosphere to a balcony on a hot night. Throw some wooden fruit in a silver bowl for a talking point. Put two ceramic pairs in a vintage silver platter. Contrast a blue bowl with limes and lemons bringing a touch of summer with memories of gin and tonics in the heat of the afternoon. Then there is always food! Teriyaki salmon in a blue bowl is a wonderful contrast and a quick tiramisu desert in a tall clear bowl is usually an instant attraction for guests. Bon appetite!
