Aqua, turquoise, teal and shades in between always draw me as images of the Côte d’Azur, sea, sun and sand hang in the air. I am here in the South of France for two weeks and in a happy, poetic frame of mind. I ask for forgiveness for this lighthearted post.

I swim every day  in an aquamarine sea as it moves across the shore pulling back the pebbles. As a fellow sea lover says, it is my happy place! For others, mountains, cool lakes, greenery and trees call them but for me, as John Masefield said, ‘I must go down to the seas again…’

The symbolism

Aqua represents a communication between the heart and voice and is supposed to balance of emotions. It is said to be a mix of calming blue and happy yellow enabling a heightened sense of awareness and clear thinking. The doctors in the past, would recommend recovering at the seaside for the colour of the ocean and for the ozone in the air to raise your serotonin. Regardless what it does, it is a colour that sings!

Colour Balance

All shades shine against white, ivory and soft coffee tones. In the Art Deco era, they loved to team it with black and silver with sharp edges and design. In the Art Nouveau period, it was all about flowers and nature. Use lemon or lime as a partner colour for effect.

And What About Fengshui?

This colour resonates with the Water element and will either help the energy flow or add too much. Remember, Water is in the Career sector and Self Knowledge area and resonates with emotions. However, if your bathroom is in the Career sector like mine, you don’t need to add water, you need to add elements of stone to soak up the overflow. Think of the Chi energy as a meandering river rather than waves and waterfalls. It should flow easily and clearly, not muddy due to mixing with the Earth elements but helping Wood to grow and to polish Metal.

Gentle Reminders

And so I buy perfume bottles from Grasse, beach towels and tiny bits of bracelets to remind me of where I truly want to be and belong.
