It is that time of year when Christmas markets open, lights go on, parcels are wrapped and then there are the decorations. Let’s talk about the tree first. It always saddens me when you see pieces of fir trees thrown out on the curb/sidewalk after the holidays. If you can manage, buy a tree and put it in the garden in a pot until next year. Or as we will do, buy an artificial tree – the new ones look real and you can use them year after year. We haven’t had one for years as our two cats see it as another toy to climb. We will spend Christmas in France and are looking for a small artificial but nicely shaped tree as in addition, one of us suffers from asthma – another good reason to find an alternative. I have seen others paint fallen branches, or buy dried grasses and spray them gold. Feng Shui still sees dried plants and old branches as representing death and the practice is to prefer silk or cotton flowers and leaves, consider painting these a new colour instead.  The next steps are what colour and style.

Where Are You Decorating?

Check the room you are decorating and what colours and elements match the sector. For the Front door, it is likely to be in the black and grey sectors. You may say, well what does that leave me to choose?! Think metal ornaments in icing, pale blue, silver and white. We have a lovely silver bell wreath we put on the front door in the Inner Knowledge area. The element here is Earth which polishes Metal – a happy partnership.

For the green and purple sectors (Family and People, Wealth and Prosperity), use wooden ornaments paired with anything green, purple and royal blue and get the best quality you can. For the red and pink sectors, reds, pinks, whites and earth tones work well. Wooden ornaments also work as wood feeds fire and becomes ash – earth. For the relationship corner, consider pairs of birds or other symbols of relationships. A singular decoration states that you are single. Finally, in the Creativity and Health Sector, white and pale yellow are ideal and match the Metal element.

Do’s & Don’ts

  • Consider what style you are attracted to and also what it is saying – sharp, spiky ornaments offer a sharp energy.
  • Cheap decorations in the Prosperity sector shout – ‘cheap and cheerful’!
  • Religious decorations are ideal in the Inner Knowledge and Spirituality sector.
  • Use red decorations in the Prosperity sector as this will match the Fire element.
  • Avoid putting red in the Water or Metal sectors as red represents Fire which will ‘put out’ the Water element and be seen to ‘melt’ Metal sectors.
  • Avoid dried plants, potpourri, fruit and pods which represent death – look for silk or textile flowers and paint silk palm.
