The bathroom is one of the key rooms in Feng Shui as you will have read in previous posts. It is all about the Water element and we need to recall that Chinese toilets were less than desirable. Fast forward to now and we treat bathrooms like spas. You will recall that were the bathroom is placed in the Bagua map tells you colours and elements to manage. Let’s start with some key aspects. Where your bathroom is will tell you what you need to balance in the different elements and you can also do this with different colours.
Don’t Put Buddha in the Bathroom
A Buddhist friend asked, would we put a cross or Jesus in the bathroom – the answer was a resounding no. By all means put this statue in the Inner Knowledge area or an area needing peace and calm but not an area of cleansing as Feng Shui practice sees it. Bathrooms are seen has having too much water and your goal is to ground and absorb the water as it is seen as draining away positive energy. There are various ways to do this and the key cures are to add ceramics, stone, wood and plants.
Berlin Bathroom
Our Berlin apartment had the bathroom in the Career sector – the black box above. While this is fine as the element is water, it can add too much emotion and draining energy to your Career. We added grey stone to earth the water and absorb the excess energy. Metal is also used in accessories to balance as metal is polished by water and becomes earth as it grinds down.
French Bathroom
Our past Antibes apartment was in the Inner Knowledge area and while that seemed a good place, the dominant element here was Earth. Too much water can muddy the earth. Are you still with me? You need earth in the form of stone but with a balance. We added warm earth tones in the towels and accessories. We placed a wooden banquette to add a warmth to the room adding the Wood element. Wood is nourished by water. You can also add deep green but that was too strong for this room. We added a touch of lime green to give some light. To summarise – the water is grounded by ceramics and stone and the wood elements ‘grow’ due to the water element. It strikes a happy balance and gives a sense of peace.
