When buying a bed, I happily fling myself on it to see if it is too soft, has enough space, and feels right. I spend as much as I can on a decent bed and I like a firm mattress. We have had two American queen size beds and we love them; however, a Feng Shui tip for relationships – make sure they are not so big that you are separate from each other!
How to Select a Bed
- Dimensions – consider how big a bed you can fit in or how much space you are willing to sacrifice
- Lie on it! – this is particularly important when choosing a mattress for the bed
- Nothing under the bed – being a Feng Shui practitioner we say no storage drawers under the bed
- A single bed says you are single – it may be all you can fit in but consider a double bed if possible
- Get a solid headboard – even if you have to be creative and make one or buy a separate one
- Spend as much as you can – first on the frame but definitely on the mattress. You won’t regret it
You Got the Look!
Now that you have the bed, what look do you want it to say? Glamorous, modern, classic, elegant; all can be achieved with the right bed linen, cushions and throws. I often change the bedroom look from winter to summer or to freshen a room. Following Feng Shui practices, also match colours according to the area that your bedrooms are in. My two Berlin bedrooms looked completely different – warm, Art Deco style for the main bedroom in the Feng Shui relationship corner and grey and white modern chic for the bedroom in the Travel and Helpful People sector. Our current French apartment is a soft cream with a happy bird and floral cover with lemon cushions.
Dress the Bed
Having followed several designers, some general suggestions are to buy the overall bed set together and then contrast with cushions and throws for texture and tone. Most designers recommend two large pillows behind that you use, add two front ones for decor and two cushions to add design or a wow factor. Too many cushions can look messy. And finally, add a throw for extra texture.
