Aqua seas, baby blue lakes, deep petrol blue oceans and every other shade of blue – it is all about water in Feng Shui. It is one of my favourite colours and you can mix and match the tones. Colour is one of Feng Shui tools that helps to balance between one element and another. While it doesn’t take the place of actual water, it represents water and can accentuate the energy of the area.
Ideally, blue is used in the water element areas of the Bagua map. Blue can also be partnered with the wood element as wood is nourished by water. Metal can be another matching element as water polishes metal but it is important to be careful; it is all a matter of balance and harmony. Review the Bagua map and as you will have seen on other posts, use the front door as if it is opening to either the Inner Knowledge, Career or Travel and Helpful People sector. Here are some areas where water and blue work in harmony with other elements and colours.
Career & Life Journey
Ideally, dark colours including black are used as this is a key Water area. Deep petrol blues are ideal and I have seen wonderful combinations of black, white and teal blue with great effect. Feng Shui practice also recommends gentle pictures or photos of waterfalls to encourage the flow of the career and life journey. My bathroom is in this sector – not normally considered to be a good idea as bathrooms are seen to drain the area. I have balanced with grey and stone to earth the energy and to partner with the water elements.
Inner Knowledge
This is a great area to use all shades of blue. Our past Berlin apartment front door opened in to this sector and we painted the back of the door a chic petrol blue and hung an obi with all the gentle shades to provide a peaceful area to enter. My friends actually say that the entrance was welcoming and serene! A Chinese painting depicting a blue stream going under a bridge was hung there and have placed a photograph of a gentle waterfall behind the picture stating that this attracts gentle and protective energy to the apartment.
Family & Health
This is a wood sector so blues and greens can be happily matched with wood elements. Pictures of trees and blossom are ideal here. The kitchen was in this sector and we added baby blue with cafe latte colours for earth and touches of wood for growth. Bedrooms here would look great with green and blue bed linen. I have seen a chic navy and white sofa in this sector with green cushions – it added rich colour with the sense of warmth and growth.
Where Not to Use
Representing water, blue will douse out the fire sector and is seen to muddy the earth area. Also, don’t go overboard in bathrooms with seashells and pictures of the sea. Bathrooms need the water energy managed to avoid the energy of that sector going down the drain. Surprisingly, some people don’t love blue! If this is the case, a touch here and there in the right place can be all you need.
