Cushions
I don’t want to count the number of cushion covers in the past that I have bought, used and sometimes sold. Cushions or throw pillows as some call them, are a great accessory in any space particularly if you are renting. They can add colour, texture and pattern to change the look and feel of furniture and a room. Remember the colour code, 60% the main colour, 30% secondary colour and 10% a touch or shade to add. If you are feeling brave, you can add a fourth colour to offer additional colour or texture. For example, I have used white, beige, lemon, lime and a touch of aqua in one room, in another, white, shades of dove grey, silver and black.
Colour
Decide what colours you are using and add solid block colours in either matching or contrasting shades. In France, I used lemon and lime cushions including one with a lemon pattern to bring them together. Consider combining patterns and mix velvet, linen and silk to add interest. Don’t put too many out, I like to keep to two, four or maximum of five if on a sofa. Our French sofa is now a mix of navy, beige and cream being in the Wealth sector. Once you have done this, you can add another colour or texture with a throw. A faux fur blanket or cable knit throw can really pull the look together. I have even seen a lovely sari used as curtains to add an exotic, sparkly feel to a plain window.
China
There is a variety of inexpensive plates, teacups and vases in stores like Zara Home, that can add pattern, colour and interest to a living space. Also consider checking out your local flea market, brocante or flohmarkt where you can find some bargains. I collect teacups but am picky as I prefer plain vintage cups and they tend to be too floral. My husband loves to collect 18th and 19th century espresso cups. For China, Anthropologie has some charming pieces and Molly Hatch is a particular favourite, https://www.mollyhatch.com and I have also found a charming store in Fréjus, France – https://www.atelierchameaublanc.com
Candles
I love candle holders. Anthropologie has beautiful big silver pots with scented candles. They can easily add colour and a change of mood in a room depending on design and proportion. I often float small candles in a bowl of flowers on warm summer nights. You can pick up a range of candle holders in flea markets but think outside of the box, I have filled white paper bags with sand and teal lights and cut out stencils to place around a garden.
